BINTULU (Jan 14): Three longhouses in the Ulu Sebauh area — Rumah Saging, Rumah Dato Raymond and Rumah Singer — have been affected by flooding after rising river levels submerged parts of the homes and left surrounding areas inundated with stagnant water.
Upon being informed of the situation, Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing immediately instructed his team to visit the affected sites to assess the conditions on the ground.
Tiong’s special officer, Steven Kong Kai Seng, said access by land was impossible due to high water levels, forcing the team to reach all three longhouses by boat.
“Among the three, Rumah Saging was the worst hit, with floodwaters entering the interior of the longhouse.
“Residents were forced to move their belongings to higher ground and construct temporary raised platforms and beds to rest and sleep safely,” he said.
He added that a nearby new house under construction beside Rumah Saging was also affected, with water reaching calf height.
Kong said residents of Rumah Dato Raymond and Rumah Singer were also impacted, as floodwaters surrounding their homes disrupted daily activities and raised concerns over safety and property.
“To ensure the well-being of the community, the management committees of the three longhouses arranged for the evacuation of elderly residents and children to temporary evacuation centres.
“However, some residents chose to remain behind to safeguard their homes,” he said.
