MIRI (Jan 21): The Sarawak government and AirBorneo have been called on to ensure that there are more flights to rural areas in the state to meet the needs of the people.
Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk Gerawat Gala said the Rural Air Service (RAS) remains the backbone of air connectivity for interior communities.
“It is not merely about flights, but a lifeline that links rural residents to healthcare, education, economic opportunities, and basic services,” he said in a Facebook post.
The Mulu assemblyman pointed out that his constituency has the highest number of airport and STOLports (Short Take-Off and Landing) in the country, with facilities located in Mulu, Long Seridan, Long Banga, Long Lellang, and Bario.
“This clearly reflects the high demand for consistent and effective air services in the DUN Mulu area,” he said.
As such, he called on AirBorneo to provide efficient, competitive, and reliable services for rural communities, with emphasis on safety, punctuality, and accessibility.
