KUCHING, Mar 4: International industry players at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2026 expressed interest in Sarawak’s semiconductor development, particularly how Sarawak Microelectronics Design SMD’s keteq.GaN technology differentiates itself in global energy systems.
In a statement, SMD chief executive officer Shariman Jamil delivered a presentation titled “Powering the Future with GaN: From Sarawak to Global Energy Systems” at the Sarawak Pavilion on the second day of the global tech gathering, focusing on the rising importance of gallium nitride in power electronics and energy systems.
He outlined why gallium nitride (GaN) is gaining traction in power electronics and its growing relevance in next generation energy systems, as well as detailing SMD’s long term ambitions and roadmap to position Sarawak as a competitive player in the global semiconductor ecosystem.
“Talent development remains central to the company’s strategy, highlighting its Semiconductor Mastery Programme as well as a recent collaboration with the University of Bristol and Yayasan Sarawak to build specialised expertise in advanced semiconductor design,” he said.
Back at the SMD booth, discussions with potential partners, investors and technology stakeholders continued throughout the day with many seeking deeper insights into the company’s operations in Sarawak and the proprietary advantages of its keteq.GaN platform.
The sustained engagement and targeted technical inquiries signalled tangible interest in Sarawak’s semiconductor ambitions, reinforcing the State’s growing visibility on the international technology stage. — DayakDaily
