Have the courage to step aside when no longer able to perform, Premier tells political leaders

KUCHING (Jan 14): Political leaders should have the courage to step aside when they are no longer able to perform, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He stressed that leadership legitimacy must be measured by results rather than tenure.

Drawing parallels with the sports and corporate sectors, he said governance at both national and state levels should be anchored on performance benchmarks to ensure sustainable development and public confidence.

“If a prime minister or premier can no longer demonstrate good performance, that is a clear sign it is time to step down.

“There is no need to wait for two or three terms. Leaders must be able to assess their own capabilities,” he said at a town hall meeting here on Tuesday night, which was held in conjunction with his ninth anniversary in office.

Abang Johari said leadership should not be treated as a lifetime position, adding that the ability to deliver outcomes matters more than how long one holds office.

He also voiced support for structured leadership renewal, saying the younger generation must be given space to take on active leadership roles when the time comes.

“I believe the new generation of Sarawak has the vision, foresight, and capacity to continue the state’s development agenda.

“When the time comes, the older generation must make way for the young,” he said.

Abang Johari noted that younger generations are beginning to understand the state government’s development policies and long-term direction, positioning them to assume leadership responsibilities in the future.

At the same time, he said senior leaders remain relevant as advisers, ensuring experience and institutional knowledge continue to guide governance.

“Even if someone can remain active until 70, 75, or 80, there will come a time when space must be given to the younger generation.

“God willing, Sarawak will continue to move forward under a new generation that has vision, foresight, and the ability to navigate future challenges and opportunities,” he added.

On Jan 5, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had pledged to introduce a two-term or 10-year limit for the prime minister’s post, which was part of Pakatan Harapan’s reform promises.

This led to calls from certain quarters, including Opposition leaders in the state, for the introduction of a similar term limit on the Sarawak premier’s post.
