KUCHING, May 20: Rising global economic uncertainties and Sarawak’s ongoing efforts to strenghthen the State’s revenue and economic growth were among key issues highlighted at the Kuching/Samarahan Hawker and Traders Association Annual General Meeting (AGM), held on Monday (May 18).
According to a press statement, in his welcoming address, chairman Chan Hot Chai urged members to remain vigilant over the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Iran, warning that rising global tensions could lead to higher fuel prices and increased costs of goods, which would directly affect hawkers and small traders.
He encouraged members facing financial difficulties to seek assistance through the micro-loan facilities provided by the Malaysia Federation of Hawkers Association to help sustain and expand their businesses during uncertain economic conditions.
Meanwhile, political secretary to the Sarawak Premier, Kho Teck Wan, representing Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian, highlighted Sarawak’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its constitutional rights over oil, gas and mining resources.
She said the State’s assertion of mining rights and the implementation of State Sales Tax (SST) on oil and gas production has contributed to higher State revenue and economic growth.
Kho also said the ongoing legal dispute involving Petronas and the Sarawak government centred on constitutional rights and control over the State’s natural resources.
According to her, the additional revenue generated would support long-term initiatives such as free tertiary education, the strengthening of Sarawak’s sovereign wealth fund, the development of Air Borneo and satellite connectivity projects aimed at improving internet access in rural areas.
She further called on Sarawakians to remain united and continue supporting the Gabungan Parti Sarawak government for its inclusive and fair policies. – DayakDaily
