KUCHING (Feb 20): The organisation of the Bau Ramadan Bazaar reflects and supports Sarawak’s aspirations for unity, said Datuk Henry Harry Jinep.
The Deputy Minister for Transport and Tasik Biru assemblyman said the collaborative effort in organising the bazaar demonstrates a strong spirit of cooperation and harmony among the district’s multi-ethnic community.
“From a social perspective, the Ramadan bazaar functions as a positive platform for daily interaction. It is a meeting point for old friends, a space to introduce traditional food, and an opportunity to educate the younger generation on the values of mutual respect in a plural society, in line with Sarawak’s national unity aspirations.
“As a son of Bau, I deeply appreciate the spirit of unity here. The tolerance shown by all residents has brought about many waves of development to this area,” he said when opening the Bau Ramadan Bazaar on Thursday.
The bazaar and Majlis Bersungkey 2026 were organised by the Bau Malay village security and development committee and Bau Malay Association in collaboration with the Bau District Council.
“Through the participation of various layers of the community, it proves that daily activities like purchasing ‘juadah’ for iftar can become a bridge of unity that brings residents together in the spirit of goodwill and mutual appreciation,” Henry said.
He called on all agencies in the district to continue maintaining close cooperation to ensure that strong ties within the community remain intact.
Despite heavy rain, the first day of the Ramadan bazaar received an encouraging response from visitors.
Bau Malay Association chairman Alwie Bol said 45 traders are participating in this year’s bazaar at Bau Market, adding that they are not charged any rental or fees.
“Bau Ramadan Bazaar traders express their utmost appreciation and gratitude to Datuk Henry for his contribution and sponsorship of tents for all 45 traders.
“May this Ramadan bazaar not only be a place for buying and selling, but also a community hub where we share sustenance,” he said.
