KUCHING, Dec 26: Sarawak is set to usher in 2026 with a historic Guinness World Records (GWR) achievement, to be officially announced during Countdown 2026 at the Kuching Waterfront on Dec 31.

In a statement today, the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) said the announcement will place Sarawak on the global stage ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026, showcasing the State’s iconic landmarks and landscapes, with Guinness World Records lending international credibility to the achievement.

“Achieving a Guinness World Records title places Sarawak among an international community of record-holders, reinforcing the State’s international standing while celebrating a moment of collective pride for its people,” he said.

Beyond the technological milestone, the initiative symbolises Sarawak’s connectivity and ambition, further strengthening its position as the Gateway to Borneo.

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah described the achievement as a reflection of Sarawak’s readiness to lead through innovation as it steps into 2026.

“Announcing this Guinness World Record on New Year’s Eve sends a strong signal of the momentum Sarawak is building as we prepare to welcome global travellers,” he said.

The Guinness World Records announcement will be a key highlight of Countdown 2026, organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak.

The New Year’s Eve celebration will feature performances by local, national and international acts, culminating in a midnight musical fireworks display.

STB added that the achievement demonstrates Sarawak’s growing presence on the world stage, highlighting how innovation, creativity and scale are driving the State’s tourism development as the Gateway to Borneo. — DayakDaily
