KUCHING, April 7: A heavy sadness swept across Sarawak today as the bodies of late trainee teachers Christopher Ling Jia Siang and Joey Ling Lin Siang were brought home to their respective hometowns, Kuching and Sibu, for final rites.
In a post shared on its social media, Sarawak Education Department stated that Christopher Ling arrived at Kuching International Airport at 4.25pm, while Joey Ling landed in Sibu around 6.30pm, each greeted by tearful family members, friends, and educators in an atmosphere of profound grief and reflection.
At Kuching, key figures from the education sector, including Sarawak Education director Omar Mahli, IPGM Batu Lintang Campus director Dr Abang Ismail, IAB Sarawak Branch director Tuan Haji Edmund, and, Deputy Secretary-General (Deputy SUT) of the Ministry of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Sarawak (MEITD) deputy secretary Anielia Siam were present to pay their respects.

Sarawak Education Department added that the Teacher Education Institute (IPG) Malaysia ensured the repatriation process was conducted smoothly and with dignity.
Christopher’s body was later transported to Chan Funeral Parlor in 5th Mile for funeral preparations, while public well-wishers and mourners at airport shared in the family’s sorrow, creating an atmosphere thick with solemnity and remembrance.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Education (MOE), the State Education Department, and District Education Offices (PPD), along with family and friends, gathered to pay their final respects.
Omar extended heartfelt condolences to both families, praying they find the strength and patience to endure this heartbreaking loss.
The two Sarawakian students, Christopher, 21, and Joey, 20, were trainee teachers at IPGM Perlis Campus who tragically drowned during an off-campus education programme at Pantai Merdeka near Sungai Petani, Kedah, on Saturday (April 4).
