KUCHING, Jan 31: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Batu Lintang Branch chairman Sih Hua Tong pledged that he would not evade his responsibilities, would not let the people down and would deliver results if given the opportunity to once again stand as the party’s candidate for the Batu Lintang seat in the coming Sarawak election.
Speaking at the SUPP Batu Lintang Branch’s 39th Anniversary Commemoration and Year of the Horse Lunar New Year celebration dinner at a restaurant here tonight, Sih said the trust placed in him by the party and grassroots was a reminder of responsibility that he carried at all times.
“As long as the party and the grassroots share the same direction, as long as the organisation trusts me and the grassroots recognise me, I am willing to continue shouldering this responsibility,” he said, drawing applause from party members and supporters present.
Sih said the strength of the party lay in teamwork and unity, stressing that grassroots work could not be accomplished without a strong and committed team.
He paid tribute to party seniors and veteran comrades, particularly those who embodied the spirit of SUPP of the 1960s and 1970s.
“Although we have not yet reached their level, we sincerely strive to learn. With your guidance and counsel, we know whether we are walking the right path and heading in the correct direction,” he said, calling on the audience to applaud the party’s pioneers.
Referring to the 2024 party convention, Sih said the resolution expressing confidence in him was not merely an honour, but a reminder of the heavy responsibility entrusted to him whenever he carried out party work or served at the grassroots level.
He also highlighted the branch’s perseverance despite past electoral setbacks, noting that the Batu Lintang Branch had continued to receive support not only from party members, but also volunteers and friends who were not party members.
“That is why we have consistently worked hard at the grassroots, served the people and helped address issues such as poverty,” he said, adding that unity ensured the party’s direction remained clear and its strength undivided.
Touching on the Year of the Horse, Sih said the new year symbolised forward momentum, strength and progress, calling on party members and supporters to be ready to step forward together to deepen grassroots work, strengthen services and gradually win back the people’s trust.
Meanwhile, event organising chairman and SUPP Batu Lintang Branch secretary Prof Dr Wang Yin Chai said the branch’s 39 years marked perseverance, achievement and deep roots in the community.
He announced that the 13th Branch Executive Committee had unanimously resolved, following democratic procedures, to fully support Sih as SUPP’s sole candidate for the N11 Batu Lintang State constituency in the upcoming Sarawak election.
Wang said Sih’s long service at the grassroots, deep understanding of local needs and people-first approach made him the most suitable candidate to represent the party and speak up for the rights and interests of Batu Lintang residents.
“We firmly believe that his successful election will add a valuable seat for SUPP in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly and enable us to more effectively promote progress and prosperity for Batu Lintang and Sarawak as a whole,” he said.
The event was officiated by Deputy Premier and SUPP president Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian and attended by party leaders, seniors and members including Serian MP Dato Sri Richard Riot Jaem, Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap, and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng. – DayakDaily
