KUCHING: Datuk Ibrahim Baki has been appointed as Sarawak Energy Berhad (Sarawak Energy) chairman effective Oct 1.

Succeeding Datuk Amar Abdul Hamed Sepawi, the chairman since 2005, the Satok assemblyman brings over three decades of experience across industries such as property development, shipping, and media.

According to a Sarawak Energy statement, Ibrahim is a legal professional by training who holds an LL.B (Hons) from the United Kingdom and is a Barrister-at-Law from Lincoln’s Inn.

He began his career as a legal officer at PETRONAS in 1984, before co-founding the law firm Messrs Idris Buang, Ibrahim Baki & Co in Sarawak and also serves as a non-independent non-executive director of PETRONAS.

Leaving behind an enduring legacy, Abdul Hamed guided Sarawak Energy’s transformation into a leading regional player in renewable energy and sustainability.

Under his leadership, it stated that Sarawak Energy expanded from a traditional utility with 2,042 employees and a generation capacity of 849MW in 2005 to over 6,000 employees and a capacity of 5,745MW today.

“During his tenure, the company achieved 99.5 per cent electrification across the state, up from 80 per cent in 2009,” Sarawak Energy said.

Moreover, it added, his contributions earned him numerous accolades, including the Sarawak State Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2004 and 2005; the BrandLaureate ‘Man of the Year’ Brand ICON Leadership Award in 2015; and Outstanding Global Muslim Entrepreneur Lifetime Achievement Award at the Global Muslim Business Forum in 2022.

“Meanwhile, in 2023, Datuk Amar Abdul Hamed was appointed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as a member of a special advisory body comprising professionals and economic experts to advise the Prime Minister in his role as Finance Minister,” Sarawak Energy said.

In light of this, Sarawak Energy also extended its gratitude to Tan Sri Datuk Seri Mohd Hassan Marican, who served as its independent non-executive director from June 9, 2010 until Aug 1, 2024.

“Mohd Hassan was appointed by the Prime Minister as the chairman of the Policy Advisory Committee, which provides counsel on national development and economic resilience.

“His expertise and insights, particularly from his extensive experience in leading multinational organisations in the energy sector, have been integral to Sarawak Energy’s successful transformation into a key player in renewable energy development and international ventures,” it said.
