KUCHING, May 1: The inaugural Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) President’s Cup Futsal Championship made its debut today, drawing 34 teams from across Sarawak to Arena Sukan Kuching.
Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the tournament brought together youths from throughout the State, including those travelling from Tanjung Datu, Ba’kelalan and Limbang.
He said the strong turnout reflected encouraging participation among youths, not only in competitive sports but also in programmes that foster interaction and closer ties.
“It is good to see youths from across Sarawak coming together in Kuching, not just to compete, but also to interact, strengthen friendships and take part in healthy activities,” he said to the media officiating the event at Arena Sukan here today.
The championship, organised by the Saberkas Recreation, Culture and Sports Sub-Committee, is being held for the first time as part of efforts to further engage youths through structured sporting initiatives.
Abdul Karim, who is the Saberkas president, said the event could be continued annually, noting that several Saberka programmes have already become recurring activities across the state.
Among them, he said, is the ‘bubur lambuk’ initiative held during Ramadan, as well as the Saberkas Sports Carnival (KASUS), which has been organised across its branches since 2019.
He added that such programmes have helped bring youths together while encouraging their involvement in sports and community-based activities.
Also present were Senator Dato Ahmad Ibrahim, Saberkas secretary general Dr Safiee Ahmad and MYSED permanent general Dzulkornain Masron. — DayakDaily
