MIRI (Aug 28): The Jalur Gemilang Merdeka 2024 convoy reached the city with a warm welcoming reception at SMK Agama here today.

Deputy Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Development Datuk Rosey Yunus in welcoming the participants, said such initiative helped inculcate a sense of patriotism and love of one’s own country.

“That’s why when we gather with enthusiasm to welcome the convoy, it is not something done with mere shouts and cheers, but with full meaning and realisation on how much we love our beloved state and country,” she said in her speech.

On the recently concluded Malaysia Games (Sukma) XXI, Rosey said the event had indeed brought all Malaysians together in the spirit of unity.

“Sukma shows us that we can embrace healthy competition through sports events, yet unite and live together in this country as one,” she said.

Rosey, who was the deputy chef de mission for Sarawak’s sailing squad in the Sukma XXI, also shared some positive feedback she had gained from other states’ participants.

“They said the people here are the best and most supportive, to the point that some of them even cried of leaving Sarawak.

“In fact, these competitors even sing and dance along to the ‘poco-poco’ and the Iban’s most famous ‘Berkikis Bulu Betis’ which somehow has become a song of unity,” she said, citing extremism and racism as threats to a nation’s peace and stability.

In conjunction with the national month, Rosey, who is Bekenu assemblywoman, called upon all Sarawakians to fly the national flag in showing their love and support for the country.

Also present was SMK Agama Miri principal Ustaz Ahmad Fauzi Yaakob.
