KUCHING, Oct 13: The Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak has proposed upgrading the approximately 13-kilometre route from Nyelong Bridge in Sarikei to Red Bridge in Bintangor into a four-lane carriageway, including the construction of two new bridges.
Deputy Minister of Public Health and Housing Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil said the proposed project would involve upgrading and widening the existing two-lane road, alongside the construction of the two bridges, their approaches and other supporting infrastructure.
“The estimated project cost would only be determined after JKR Sarawak completed the detailed design and cost estimation for the proposed works,” he said inresponding to Repok assemblyman Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii during the question-and-answer session at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUNS) sitting today.
On the condition of Nyelong River Bridge, Dr Penguang said Sarikei District Council (MDS) had no immediate plans to upgrade or widen the bridge.
He explained that the bridge was constructed by JKR Sarawak and handed over to MDS in 2008.
“Since then, the bridge and its associated road facilities had been registered under the council’s Malaysian Road Records Information System (MARRIS), together with Jalan Meranti,” he explained.
Dr Penguang said MDS would continue carrying out routine maintenance, particularly works that did not involve major structural repairs or upgrading.
However, the proposed road improvement from Nyelong Bridge to Red Bridge would fall under JKR Sarawak, which would serve as the implementing agency for the project.
The proposed four-lane upgrade is expected to cover the existing road corridor linking Sarikei and Bintangor, with the additional bridges and associated infrastructure forming part of the overall development scope. — DayakDaily
