SERIAN, April 7: Progress on the upgrading of the 14.9km Phase 1 stretch of the Jalan Padawan project from Tapah junction to Teng Bekap is at 54 per cent and is scheduled to be completed by February next year, or possibly earlier.

However, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Aidel Lariwoo said the contractor (TMK Construction) has given its commitment to complete the project earlier than scheduled.

“With land matters and structures within the project alignment already resolved, progress is slightly ahead of schedule, with completion targeted for February next year.

“The contractor, which is among the best in Kuching, is committed and determined to complete the project ahead of schedule,” Aidel told reporters during a site visit today.

The new contractor took over the project in February 2024, replacing the previous contractor whose contract was terminated due to poor performance.

Aidel also said that Phase 2 of the project, stretching 15km from Teng Bekap to Kampung Anah Rais, will continue under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).

According to him, the design works for Phase 2 of the project, which is similar to Phase 1, have been completed and will proceed as scheduled.

The project was initiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in 2018 and is expected to benefit more than 6,000 residents from Kampung Mundai, Kampung Simpok, Kampung Peraya, Kampung Stabut, Kampung Krian, Kampung Sira, and Teng Bekap.

Aidel added that the contract for the 15.6km stretch from Kampung Anah Rais to Jalan Serian-Tebedu will be awarded soon.

“After RM13, the entire Padawan area will be covered by road,” he said. — DayakDaily
