JPKK to function as independent entity, pending amendments to relevant laws, says minister

KUCHING (Feb 10): The Child Development Department (JPKK) will function as an independent entity, with operations already underway pending amendments to the relevant legislation, said Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

“Its operational framework is in place and we have added positions to strengthen its functions.

“However, the appointment of the Ketua Pengarah (director-general) has not been made yet, as it involves amendments to the relevant laws,” she told reporters after the closing ceremony of the Dayung Warisan programme at the Old Courthouse here yesterday.

She added the ministry was taking a more cautious approach to ensure no overlapping with existing Acts or legal frameworks.

“We have not been informed how long it will take, because we are concerned that the Acts and laws may overlap. E need to ensure everything is properly aligned before any amendments are made,” she said.

Nancy said that while waiting for a formal appointment, Dr Sopian Brahim has been tasked with overseeing the department as acting director.
