KANOWIT, Dec 24: The Kanowit–Sedaya ferry service has officially commenced operations, providing improved connectivity and easing daily travel for residents along Jalan Kubu and Kampung Sedaya.

In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, Ngemah Assemblyman Anyi Jana said the service is expected to have a positive impact on daily commuting, access to essential services, and local economic activities.

“With the commencement of this ferry service, travel time will be significantly reduced, offering a more direct and efficient route for the community,” he said after officiating at Ferry Ramp Site A, Jalan Kubu yesterday (Dec 23).

Anyi added that the need for the ferry service had long been raised during Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sittings due to the challenges faced by residents travelling between Kanowit town and Jalan Nibong Tada.

Previously, residents from Jalan Nibong Tada had to take a longer route via the Batang Rajang Bridge in Durin to reach Kanowit town, resulting in extended travel times and inconvenience.

He expressed his appreciation to the Sarawak government and the Public Works Department (JKR) Sibu Division for responding to the community’s needs by implementing the ferry service.

Anyi also urged users to operate the ferry responsibly and adhere to safety guidelines set by the operator.

Regarding operating hours, he said that during the Christmas and New Year festive season, from Dec 24, 2025, to Jan 3, 2026, the ferry will run from 4am to midnight. After the festive period, normal operating hours will be from 4am to 10pm.

Also present at the launch were Machan assemblyman Allan Siden Gramong, political secretary to the Minister of National Unity Dr Stephen William, JKR Sibu Division engineer Ir Chieng Siong Ming, Kanowit District Officer’s representative Casseylia Benet, department heads and community leaders. — DayakDaily
