KUCHING, March 25: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) has requested Sarawak Metro and Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) contractors to avoid carrying out construction works during peak hours, particularly at 9am and 4.30pm, to prevent worsening traffic congestion.
MPKS chairman Abang Ismawi Abang Ali said the council has held discussions with Sarawak Metro and the main contractor to ensure construction activities are effectively managed during busy periods.
“We have asked the authorities and contractors to avoid construction during peak hours to ensure residents’ daily movements are not disrupted. We will continue to stay in close contact with all parties to ensure development projects proceed smoothly while reducing traffic burden,” he said when met by reporters at a Hari Raya Open House event today.
On traffic issues in the urban area, Abang Ismawi acknowledged that despite numerous ongoing construction projects, congestion remains a key concern.
He added that while the ART project may contribute to traffic build-up in the short term, it is expected to ease pressure on roads once completed.
“The situation has improved, but we hope that once the ART project is completed, it will further reduce traffic congestion in Kota Samarahan,” he said.
Abang Ismawi noted that Kota Samarahan is developing rapidly, with various infrastructure projects set to further enhance the town’s image, particularly the construction of bridges linking rural villages.
He also highlighted that the area is undergoing rapid urbanisation, with developments including bridges, the National Cancer Institute, and planned road systems.
He added that the recently announced Green Park project by the Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will be a major urban development in the coming years, covering 1,000 hectares and aimed at creating more living and business opportunities.
“With these developments, our councillors and municipal staff are working hard to ensure the smooth implementation of these projects and to provide a better living environment for residents,” he added.
Meanwhile, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian and his wife, Datin Amar Enn Ong Siok Ean, led their delegation in extending Hari Raya greetings to Abang Ismawi. Also present were Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang and the Premier of Sarawak’s political secretary, Kho Teck Wan. — DayakDaily
