KUCHING (Oct 25): KPJ Kuching Specialist Hospital (KPJ Kuching) has marked a significant milestone by becoming the first healthcare facility in Borneo to implement the VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution.

According to a statement, this revolutionary system elevates the precision and efficiency of joint replacement surgeries, reinforcing KPJ Kuching’s unwavering commitment to delivering world-class healthcare to the region.

It is the second robotic joint replacement technology currently used by the hospital.

The VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution, developed by Johnson & Johnson, provides surgeons with unparalleled accuracy in knee replacement procedures through the use of cutting-edge robotic technology and real-time data.

This personalised approach to surgery not only increases surgical precision but also optimises patient outcomes, offering benefits such as quicker recovery times, reduced post-operative discomfort, and greater long-term success.

KPJ Kuching consultant orthopaedic surgeon Dr Lee Woo Guan, who pioneered this robotic system, said this groundbreaking technology has allowed the hospital to deliver more precise and tailored treatments for its patients.

“The VELYS system is a game-changer and we are excited to bring this innovation to this part of Borneo, giving our patients access to the best available care for knee replacement surgeries.

“It is an imageless system, which means patients do not require special X-rays or CT scans preoperatively,” he said.

Since its introduction in late September this year, Dr Lee has performed 52 cases of total knee replacement cases using the VELYS Robotic-Assisted Knee Replacement System.

Apart from KPJ Kuching, the system is also used in Sunway Medical Centre Kuala Lumpur.

With the introduction of the VELYS system, KPJ Kuching aims to become the Centre of Excellence in Total Knee Arthroscopy in the region.

The hospital’s leadership is committed to continuously upgrading its services, enhancing its surgical capabilities, and offering the latest technological advancements to meet the growing demands of orthopaedic patients in Sarawak and across Borneo.

Additionally, KPJ Kuching is further strengthening its commitment to this vision by expanding its team of highly skilled orthopaedic specialists.

The addition of Dr Nazari Ahmad Tarmuzi, a highly skilled consultant orthopaedic surgeon, strengthens the hospital’s capacity to provide specialised care across a wider range of orthopaedic conditions, which includes trauma care, spinal surgeries and sports injuries.

The hospital is at the forefront of adopting innovative medical technologies that deliver exceptional patient outcomes with the launch of the VELYS System.

“With our expanding team of orthopaedic consultants and cutting-edge technology like VELYS, KPJ Kuching will become a leader in orthopaedic surgery and a destination for patients seeking exceptional care,” said KPJ Kuching general manager Nor Azlina Jemain.

KPJ Kuching is part of the renowned KPJ Healthcare Berhad network, the leading private healthcare provider in Malaysia.

The introduction of the VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution further strengthens KPJ’s mission to offer the best medical care and the highest standard of healthcare in the country.
