KUCHING, Sept. 24: The field of nursing should be seen as a professional career and not just a caregiving task like previous perceptions of society, said Minister for Women, Family and Community Development, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.
He said that the government is now opening up broader opportunities to the public including out-of-school people to get skills training through TVET related programmes in an effort to produce qualified guardians.
According to him, the need for skilled caregivers is increasing not only in the country but also has potential internationally.
"If only people remembered, 'Oh, this is just a guard.' But it's actually a job that requires skill and training. We want them to be qualified and professional guardians", he said.
He said this during a media briefing after completing the 2026 Student Appreciation Council of Sejingkat Technical High School, here today.
Commenting further, Nancy said the training provided included basic healthcare knowledge such as monitoring blood sugar levels, managing physical needs and appropriate care methods according to individual circumstances.
He also announced efforts to strengthen the field in line with the passage of the Social Work Professions Act (Bill) 2026 which will help recognise the role of skilled caregivers as part of social work.
"This is what we want Malaysia to be a skilled and well-known caretaker out there, not just for their workforce but for the skills they have", he said. - TVS
