Kuching Low-Carbon Gas Hub to attract RM200 bln in investments into Sarawak

KUCHING, Oct 31: The upcoming Kuching Low-Carbon Gas Hub is projected to attract foreign investments of up to RM200 billion into Sarawak.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg emphasised that this hub, part of the Sarawak Gas Roadmap, will introduce natural gas to Kuching for the first time.

“This initiative will foster the development of world-class carbon capture and storage (CCS) infrastructure while unlocking offshore gas development in Western Sarawak.

“The project, supported by essential infrastructure such as a new deep-sea port, is a cornerstone of our vision for a sustainable future,” he said when officiating Petroleum Sarawak Berhad ‘s (Petros) 7th anniversary celebration dinner at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) last night (Oct 30) which was broadcast live via Ukas Channel.

Abang Johari highlighted that Petros, now the third largest oil and gas equity producer in Malaysia, is making significant strides in fueling Sarawak’s energy future with a RM1 billion commitment to the Samalaju Pipeline project.

“As we speak, pipe materials are being manufactured, with the installation of this offshore pipeline on track for completion by November 2025,” he disclosed.

Other commitments include a RM100 million investment in the Gas to Bintulu project, aimed at providing natural gas access to Bintulu.

As the primary gas aggregator, Petros is entrusted with investing in the development, expansion, management and maintenance of critical gas and energy infrastructure throughout Sarawak.

“This journey of progress has always been about unlocking new industrial investment opportunities across the Sarawak to build a foundation for long-term economic sustainability. By managing our resources through Petros, we take charge of our future, ensuring that the benefits we receive from Sarawak’s resources reach the people of Sarawak directly,” he affirmed. — DayakDaily
