SIBU (March 7): Heavy rain earlier in the afternoon did not dampen the spirits of residents from all walks of life as they flocked to the eighth edition of Lan Berambeh Sungkei at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1 this evening.

Sibu Resident Abang Mohamad Porkan Abang Budiman said the iconic mass breaking-of-fast event, now in its 2026 edition, successfully drew the targeted crowd of 25,000 people.

“The skies have cleared after the rain this afternoon and people are turning up in droves for the programme.

“Yes, we have achieved our target of registering 25,000 for this year’s Lan Berambeh Sungkei,” he told reporters.

The annual event is organised by Sibu Division’s permanent committee for Muslim festivities in collaboration with Nangka Service Centre and RTM Sarawak, Abang Mohamad Porkan added. He also serves as chairman of the organising committee.

Highlighting the community spirit of the event, he said it follows a potluck concept, where visitors bring their own dishes to share and exchange, a tradition passed down through generations.

Asked if the event might be developed as a tourism attraction in the future, he replied affirmatively.

“Actually, we have put this annual event into our tourism plan. We had sent a letter to the State Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts.

“In fact, this year’s event is funded by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak,” he said, adding that State Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, who pioneered the programme, also lent his support.

Abang Mohamad Porkan noted that attendees came not only from across Sarawak but also from Brunei and Kalimantan, joining Sibu residents to enliven the celebration.

Dr Annuar was represented at the event by his political secretary, Sayed Azmee Wan Junaidi.

Also present were National Unity Minister Dato Sri Aaron Ago Dagang and community leader Temenggong Dato Sri Wan Hamid Edruce Tuanku Mohamad.
