KUCHING, Jan 9: A 1,050mm main pipeline ruptured near the Jalan Haji Baki traffic light here after a landslide at Jalan Batu Kitang, causing low water pressure and water supply disruptions across Kuching.
In a Facebook post, Sarawak Water said the incident was caused by a burst pipeline that led to soil erosion and loss of ground support beneath the affected road.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the pipe burst was triggered by a landslide near the Haji Baki traffic light, resulting in ground movement that imposed excessive stress on the 1050mm Mild Steel Cement-Lined (MSCL) pumping mains pipeline.
“This caused pipe displacement and rupture, subsequently contributing to the embankment failure,” it said in a statement.
As a result, consumers in Kuching, including Petra Jaya, Kota Samarahan, and Padawan, experienced low water pressure and unscheduled water supply interruptions.
Hence, Sarawak Water swiftly implemented emergency measures to reduce water loss and stabilise pressure, with repair works to proceed when site conditions are safe.
Sarawak Water said it is working closely with relevant authorities and technical agencies to ensure repair and reinstatement works are done safely and effectively.
They apologised for the disruption and assured the public that updates will be shared. — DayakDaily
