KUCHING, Jan 26: Federation of Chinese Associations of Sarawak president Dato Richard Wee hopes the culture of mudslinging will not persist in the State as it may tear the social fabric of Sarawak.
Expressing his respect for different opinions and views, he however stressed that he would not tolerate those who intentionally create social disharmony in the name of freedom of speech.
“I sincerely remind all not to allow this culture of mudslinging and spreading of slanderous rumours to rear its ugly head, thereby destroying and disrupting social order.
“I respect different opinions and views, but I will not allow the freedom of speech to tear apart our social harmony,” said Wee in response to the favourable verdict of his now-concluded defamation suit against DAP’s Michael Kong which the Kuching High Court decided today.
In the defamation suit brought by Wee against Kong over a Facebook post on July 21, 2020, the Kuching High Court ruled today that Kong must pay a total of RM250,000 in damages.
High Court Judge Dato Haji Alwi Abdul Wahab also ordered Kong to permanently remove the alleged Facebook post within seven days.
Welcoming the outcome of the suit, Wee said the case had gone through a lengthy trial and today, he finally restored his innocence and his family’s reputation. — DayakDaily
