SARAWAK will intensify gas exploration in Limbang-Trusan next year, with the northern region potentially emerging as a new growth corridor for industrial development and petrochemicals.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the area holds promising gas potential, which could open new opportunities for revenue diversification.

“Looking ahead, with promising gas potential in Limbang-Trusan set for intensified exploration next year, the northern frontier is poised to emerge as a new growth corridor for industry, petrochemicals, and revenue diversification,” he said when tabling the Supply (2027) Bill, 2026 on Monday (Oct 12).

Abang Johari said Sarawak will continue strengthening its strategic gas initiatives to drive industrial growth and support the energy transition.

He said the Adong Kechil West field in Block SK433 has achieved its first oil production this year from Well No 1, reviving Sarawak’s onshore petroleum industry after nearly five decades.

The field’s associated gas will support the 500-megawatt (MW) Miri Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Power Plant, strengthening local energy supply security.

The plant, Sarawak’s first hydrogen-ready facility, is on track for completion in 2027 and will anchor the Miri Gas Hub.

Meanwhile, the Premier said the development of the Kuching Low-Carbon Gas Hub at Tanjung Embang is expected to commence next year under a public-private partnership model.

“It will integrate liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification, gas-fired power generation and low-carbon industries, supported by new logistics infrastructure,” he added.

Abang Johari, who is the Finance and New Economy minister, said these initiatives under the Sarawak Gas Roadmap aim to increase domestic gas utilisation from 7.1 per cent to 30 per cent by 2030.

“In short, the Gas Roadmap is not only about energy. It is about building a stronger economy, empowering our workforce, and ensuring every Sarawakian shares the benefits of the energy transition,” he said.
