KUCHING, Sept 8: Police have mobilised a search and rescue (SAR) team following the crash of a BO-105 helicopter near the Long Lellang Long Lellang Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) airport in Marudi this afternoon.

In a statement, Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said the status of all those on board, including the pilot, was still under investigation.

“It has been confirmed that the helicopter belongs to a company contracted to provide flying doctor services at three locations from Miri to Ba Lai, Long Siut, and Long Lellang, Marudi, Sarawak. The status of all those involved has yet to be ascertained,” he said.

Air support using helicopters is currently not possible due to hazy weather conditions, and permission to fly from the PDRM Kuching Air Base was not granted by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM).

“The SAR operation currently depends on assistance from villagers, Rela personnel, and auxiliary police officers. The SAR team will reach the incident site as soon as possible. Details of the passengers involved will be confirmed later,” he said.

He also advised members of the public not to speculate as to allow further investigations to be conducted jointly with the Air Accident Investigation Division of the Ministry of Transport. — DayakDaily
