MIRI (Feb 15): The road upgrading project at Lorong 2B, Kampung Pulau Melayu here has been competed ahead of schedule.

The RM80,000 project, funded under the Piasau constituency’s Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) 2025, involved resurfacing a gravel road with asphalt to improve traffic flow and enhance the daily living conditions of residents.

Originally scheduled for completion on March 11 after commencing on Jan 12, the works were finished in early February and the road has since been opened to traffic.

Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts I Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, who inspected the site recently, said the upgrade was carried out following feedback from residents who highlighted issues with uneven surfaces and water accumulation during rainy weather.

He noted that road construction and maintenance are essential infrastructure that significantly impact residents’ daily routines, including commuting, schooling, medical emergencies and local economic activities.

Improving basic infrastructure, he stressed, remains a priority of the government under the RTP.

Ting praised contractors and relevant agencies for the early completion of road project.

“The smooth implementation and strong cooperation among all parties enabled the project to be delivered earlier than planned, allowing the local community to benefit sooner from safer and more durable road infrastructure,” he said.

Ting added that the government will continue addressing basic public needs in rural areas across Sarawak through continuous improvements to roads, public facilities and community environments to support more comfortable and sustainable development.
