KUCHING (July 5): The Sarawak Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) is looking forward to collaborating with Sarawak Metro to enhance Kuching’s public transportation system.
Its chairman Michael Kong emphasised the importance of this partnership to create a more efficient, reliable, and comprehensive public transportation network for Kuching’s residents.
He said LPKP Sarawak, as the licensing board of commercial vehicles, has long supported the public transportation industry in Sarawak, and this collaboration would further strengthen its role.
“In the coming year, LPKP Sarawak will play a pivotal role in assisting the federal Transport Ministry with the Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) in Kuching.
“With 56 city buses planned under the SBST and Sarawak Metro’s KUTS (Kuching Urban Transportation System), we expect significant improvements in the public transformation system next year.
“I look forward to working together with Sarawak Metro and all industry players to elevate our public transportation system to greater heights,” he said in a statement following a meeting with Sarawak Metro at LPKP Sarawak’s head office here today, where Sarawak Metro provided a briefing on KUTS.
“With the red and blue lines scheduled to operate by the end of 2025, I also invited MPs and assemblymen whose constituencies will be affected by KUTS to join the initiative,” Kong added.
The KUTS will feature 38 train-buses under the Autonomous Rail Transit (ART) system.
“One of the main challenges for any public transportation system is addressing ‘first mile’ and ‘last mile’ connectivity.
“I am reassured that Sarawak Metro acknowledges the importance of this aspect and plans to roll out 55 shuttle buses to service these critical routes,” he said.
