BINTANGOR (Dec 31): Police arrested a 27-year-old man and seized methamphetamine following an Ops Tapis raid at a house along Jalan Bunga Raya here on Tuesday.
Meradong police chief DSP Tansli Mering said the suspect was detained at about 1.30pm on Dec 30 by a team from the Sarawak Contingent Police Headquarters Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department during a raid on an unnumbered house in the Bintangor area.
“During the inspection, police found seven transparent plastic packets containing crystal-like substances believed to be methamphetamine on a wooden chair where the suspect was lying in the living room,” he said in a statement today.
Tansli said the suspect was later brought to the Sarikei District Narcotics Investigation Department for further investigation.
Urine screening tests conducted on the suspect returned negative results for drugs.
He added that the seized drugs weighed an estimated 6.60 grammes, with a market value of about RM660.
Police checks also revealed that the suspect has no prior criminal or drug-related records.
According to Tansli, police had been monitoring the suspect’s activities since early December and will continue enforcement actions to track down and arrest individuals involved in drug-related activities in the district.
“We will not compromise with any party involved in any illegal drug related activities. Continuous operations will be carried out to curb drug abuse in the district,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a penalty of imprisonment for not less than two years and not more than five years, and whipping of between three and nine strokes upon conviction.
Tansli urged members of the public to cooperate by providing information related to drug activities in Meradong. Information can be channelled to the Bintangor Police Station at 084-693222.
