KUCHING (Jan 25): Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng distributed 1,000 bowls of ‘laba’ porridge to the public at Kenyalang Market on Sunday.

The porridge was prepared by the Seng Tong Buddhist Association as part of its annual community outreach, symbolising compassion, sharing and goodwill.

“The activity brought together volunteers and the local community in a warm and meaningful celebration of cultural and spiritual values,” said a statement issued by the Mayor’s Office in Kuching South City Council (MBKS).

‘Laba’ porridge is a Chinese ceremonial dish traditionally eaten on the eighth day of the 12th lunar month.

Wee pointed out that such initiative reflected the spirit of unity and harmony in the city’s diverse society, while strengthening community bonds through a simple act of kindness.

He extended appreciation to the Seng Tong Buddhist Association for its continuous commitment in serving the community and promoting positive values.

The distribution received an encouraging response from members of the public, who welcomed the gesture as a reminder of compassion, gratitude and togetherness.

“MBKS remains committed to supporting community based initiatives that foster inclusiveness, mutual respect and social harmony among the people of Kuching,” said the Mayor’s Office in the statement.
