Dato Wee Hong SengBy Shikin Louis
KUCHING, April 30: Dato Wee Hong Seng has dismissed speculation that his frequent visits to areas such as Pending signal plans to contest in the upcoming 13th Sarawak Election, stressing that his presence on the ground is part of his duty as mayor of the Kuching South City Council (MBKS).
Responding to a question from the media, he said such assumptions often arise whenever he is seen actively engaging with different localities.
“When I go to Padungan, people say I want to contest there. This morning I went to India Street — why not say I want to contest there as well?
“You see, it is the duty of a mayor to move around. As a mayor, I work across all areas,” he told reporters after the launch of a beautification project at Bintawa Roundabout today.
He pointed out that MBKS’ initiatives began in Padungan, followed by areas such as Icom Square, and have since extended towards Bintawa, Pending, and Kenyalang.
“These are all areas under MBKS. I have to cover all of them. If I don’t go, people will ask why I am focusing on only one place,” he added.
Wee is the Pending deputy chairman of the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP).
He previously contested the Padungan seat under the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) ticket, but lost to Chong Chieng Jen of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), who won with a 1,198-vote majority. — DayakDaily
