KUCHING, Mar 28: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) joined local authorities across Sarawak today in observing Earth Hour, with Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng urging the public to practise energy conservation beyond the annual one-hour campaign to support environmental sustainability.

According to him, initiatives such as Earth Hour are intended to raise long-term awareness of the importance of reducing energy consumption.

“Earth Hour is not just about that one hour. We hope the message continues beyond tonight. We want people to start practising energy-saving habits at home, such as switching off lights when they are not needed,” he told reporters after officiating the Virtual Earth Hour programme at Taman Sahabat today.

He added that local authorities across the State have been working together to promote environmental awareness through coordinated initiatives.

As part of the programme, lights were switched off at several MBKS-managed facilities and landmarks, including Song Kheng Hai Hawker Centre, Kenyalang Market, Taman Sahabat, the Padungan Arch, and the iconic White Cat Monument.

The Earth Hour programme in Sarawak was hosted this year by the Sri Aman District Council at the Sri Aman Mini Stadium, bringing together local authorities across the State in a coordinated effort to raise awareness on environmental protection and sustainable energy use. — DayakDaily
