KUCHING, June 29: A total of 93 ‘Happiness’ trees, scientifically known as Garcinia subelliptica, were planted along Jalan Sherip Masahor to enhance the greenery in this part of the city.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng officiated the event along with Deputy Mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili and Hui Sing Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) chairman Kapitan Tan Gun Kee.
The tree planting programme was initiated under the Local Agenda 21 (LA21) 2024 program of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government.
Wee emphasised that the initiative also aims to increase the number of trees planted in the southern part of the city while contributing to the national campaign of planting 100 million trees by 2025.
“We hope it will raise awareness and encourage Kuchingites to continue greening our environment for better living.
“It is also in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 13: Climate Action,” he told reporters when met at Hui Sing Recreational Park today.
The event was successfully implemented with the participation of members from the Council, Hui Sing JKKK, and the Red Crescent Association Stampin Branch. — DayakDaily
