KUCHING, March 18: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has swiftly implemented temporary mitigation measures at Lorong Sungai Apong, including raising the road level at the affected section and installing one or two 4-inch perforated pipes across the road, covered with premix, to improve water flow and accelerate surface drying during non-rainy periods.

The initiative follows a recent site inspection conducted by MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, accompanied by councillors Albert Tay, Eric Tay, Judy Kho, and MBKS Engineering staff led by Daniel Chua.

The inspection highlighted critical road and drainage issues affecting residents, particularly school children commuting to nearby schools such as SJK Sungai Apong.

During the walkabout, Wee noted that the existing drainage system struggles to handle water discharge, causing frequent ponding on the road during heavy rain. The resulting hazardous conditions posed risks to both motorists and pedestrians.

“These temporary measures are intended to immediately improve safety and usability of the road while we plan for a permanent engineering solution.

“The raised section should remain dry, reducing risks to road users, especially our children,” he said in a media release today.

MBKS is actively seeking funding for a long-term solution, including the construction of a new box culvert, which will resolve the drainage bottleneck and prevent future flooding along the stretch.

Wee emphasised that the project aligns with MBKS’s Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) Action Plan, which prioritises safer public spaces and school environments.

Earlier, potholes along the affected road section were also repaired to enhance immediate safety.

MBKS reiterated its commitment to delivering responsive, sustainable infrastructure solutions and will continue to monitor the area closely while advancing long-term improvements for the benefit of the community. — DayakDaily
