MBKS spare free parking for OKU vehicles

KUCHING, Sept 20: South Kuching City Council (MBKS) is currently in the process of preparing an official proposal for exemption from parking fees for vehicles parked in the special area of People with Disabilities (OKU) under its administration.

Mayor of South Kuching, Dato Wee Hong Seng said the proposal would be put forward inThe Full Meeting of MBKS Council was submitted to the Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government of Sarawak for final approval.

"This step is part of MBKS's efforts to facilitate the OKU group using special parking lots provided", he said as he met the media after attending the 4th Cheongsam Cultural Festival 2026 at the People's Hall, Padungan Road here today.

In the meantime, he said, MBKS also stepped up preparations for demographic change and increasing population of golden citizens.

"Two special parking lots for Golden Citizens are now available and the facility will be gradually extended to shopping malls as well as other public areas.

"Sarawak is expected to enter the ageing phase of society by 2028, thus requiring early preparation including infrastructure improvement and provision of more programmes suitable for the golden age", he said.

Meanwhile, the Fourth Cheongsam Cultural Festival 2026 also set a record in Malaysia Book of Records with 520 participants, including over-80s.
