MIRI (March 20): Medan Saberkas Night Market continues to play a vital role in supporting local vendors and enhancing visitor experience, said Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Chiew Choon Man.

Chiew, who is also Miri MP, made these remarks following his recent visit to the popular night market, where he engaged with both vendors and visitors.

During the visit, he distributed bubur pedas (a traditional Sarawak dish) to traders and patrons in conjunction with the Ramadan season.

“It was truly a joy to interact with the community.

“The vibrant atmosphere and strong turnout at the night market clearly demonstrate the important role that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the food industry play in strengthening our local economy,” he said in a statement on Thursday.

According to Chiew, Saberkas Night Market remains the only night market in Miri and continues to attract visitors not only from within the city but also from neighbouring Brunei.

He noted that the market hosts some 160 food vendors offering a wide variety of dishes, many of which are unique to Sarawak, making it a vital hub for the local community and a distinctive attraction for tourists.

“As such, ensuring that the night market is well-maintained remains a priority.

“This is important so that visitors have a positive experience, while vendors are able to operate in a conducive and efficient environment,” he added.

In line with this, Chiew said he would assist in securing grants for upgrading and maintenance works at the Medan Saberkas Night Market.

He expressed hope that such improvements would enhance operational standards and cleanliness, while further strengthening Medan Saberkas Night Market as a must-visit destination for both local and international visitors.
