‘Milestone’ S’wak Open attracts foreign picklers

MIRI (Oct 30): The inaugural Sarawak Pickleball Open Tournament (SPOT) will be held at at MYY Mall, Lutong from Nov 22 to 24.

The three-day competition, which is organised by Sarawak Pickleball Association (SPA), has attracted players from all over Malaysia and countries such as Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

SPA patron Datuk Sebastian Ting, who is also Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts I, has described the event as “a new milestone” for the development of pickleball in the country.

“This event is a testament to our dedication to promoting sports and healthy lifestyles within our community. Pickleball has grown rapidly in popularity, it embodies the spirit of inclusivity and active engagement. It is a sport that transcends age and skill levels, allowing everyone to participate and enjoy,” he said at a press conference at a local hotel here yesterday.

The assemblyman for Piasau also believes the tournament is a good boost to Miri’s tourism and economy.

“Through initiatives like this tournament, we aim to attract visitors, boost our tourism sector and promote our vibrant culture and hospitality,” he added.

The tournament will feature the seven categories of men’s singles open, men’s doubles open, women’s singles open, women’s doubles open, intermediate mixed doubles, masters mixed doubles open and mixed doubles open.

Also present at the press conference were SPA chairperson Delima Ibrahim, who is also tournament director, and Farrell Choo representing the Malaysia Pickleball Association.
