MIRI (July 24): Miri Hospital Blood Bank has collected 4,488 pints of blood as of June 31, which is 55 per cent behind the targeted 10,000 pints of blood for this year, said mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang.

He said despite that, the blood bank recorded a spike in blood donors, with 808 new donors recorded as of June 31 this year.

“Of the 4,488 pints of blood collected, 3,111 were from permanent blood donors,” he said when officiating at the 722 blood donation campaign held in conjunction with Sarawak Independence Day at Permaisuri Imperial City Mall on Monday.

Yii, who is also Pujut assemblyman, called on more people especially the younger generation to come forward and donate blood in achieving the target of 10,000 pints by year end.

“Only 173 of the 256 individuals who registered for the blood donation campaign successfully donated their blood, and 65 of them were new blood donors,” he added.

The event was jointly organised by the Miri MRC Blood Donor Recruitment Committee, Miri Thai Poo Community Association Youth Section, Miri Chiang Hsia Huang Clan Association Youth Section, Kwong Wai Siew Association Miri Division Youth Section, Miri Youth Activities Centre, Kelab Sosial MIRIfm Jabatan Penyiaran Miri, Northern Sarawak Journalists Association, Miri Rainbow Chorus Society Youth Section and Clan Chen Association Miri Youth Section.
