MIRI (Jan 10): Immediate humanitarian assistance has been stepped up following floods that have affected several areas here due to continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days.

In a statement, MP Chiew Choon Man said a team from the Miri Parliamentary Service Centre visited the temporary evacuation centre (PPS) at Tudan Phase 4 Community Hall on Friday to distribute essential aid to evacuees.

During the visit, 80 food baskets were distributed to flood victims taking shelter at the centre, along with 12 cartons of bottled drinking water.

“The assistance was channelled in view of the unstable weather conditions and persistent heavy rain in Miri, which have disrupted the daily lives of affected residents,” he said.

Chiew added that his service centre would continue its humanitarian efforts, with another round of food aid scheduled to be delivered the following day to two other PPS locations within the Miri parliamentary constituency, subject to needs on the ground.

He also expressed his appreciation to all parties involved in managing the flood situation, including PPS personnel, relevant agencies and volunteers, for their dedication in safeguarding the welfare and safety of flood victims.

“The Miri MP’s office will continue to closely monitor the flood situation and work hand in hand with the relevant agencies to ensure assistance is delivered promptly and effectively,” he said.
