Mobile smart water system delivers clean water to rural Pakan communities

PAKAN (Feb 14): The Borneo Blue Smart Water System was launched at Rumah Empi in Tanjong Lelengau here.

Pakan assemblyman Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom witnessed the testing and commissioning of the mobile smart water treatment system, which was spearheaded by Seri Sigma Sdn Bhd.

The facility is being implemented as a six-month proof of concept to demonstrate how a portable and easy-to-deploy treatment unit can supply clean and safe water to off-grid rural communities.

Mawan described it as a practical solution that could potentially be replicated in other rural settlements across Sarawak facing similar water supply challenges.

“This initiative underscores the role of local innovation in addressing rural infrastructure gaps and enhances the quality of life for longhouse communities in Sarawak’s interior,” he said.

The facility’s modular system is designed for rapid deployment and can be transported via four-wheel drive vehicles, small trucks, or boats — making it suitable for interior areas with limited accessibility.

It can source raw water from rivers, rainwater and groundwater, which is then treated through a multi-stage filtration process to produce water suitable for daily use.

A key feature of the system is its ability to operate independently of the main power grid, through its integrated solar energy system that is supported by digital monitoring tools that enable remote tracking of water quality and operational performance.

Through an Internet of Things (IoT) dashboard, technical teams can monitor parameters such as pH levels, turbidity, flow rate, tank capacity and temperature in real time for prompt maintenance and performance assessment.

Data collected throughout the proof of concept phase will be used to determine the system’s feasibility for wider implementation in other off-grid communities in the state.
