MOE: Haze forces school closures in Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya

KUCHING: Schools in Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya will be closed on Friday (Oct 9) due to the worsening haze, Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek said.

In Pahang, only schools in the Rompin district will be affected, while schools in other states will operate according to the academic calendar.

Fadhlina announced the closures in a social media post on Thursday night, saying the decision was made with the safety of students in mind.

She acknowledged that school closures could disrupt parents’ arrangements and said efforts would be made to announce future decisions earlier.

“I understand that school closures affect parents’ arrangements. Moving forward, we will try to announce decisions earlier to give parents time to prepare, while continuing to prioritise safety based on the current haze situation,” she said.

The Education Ministry had earlier directed institutions in areas recording Air Pollutant Index (API) readings above 180 to close from Oct 9 as haze continued to affect large parts of the country.

As of Thursday, unhealthy air quality was recorded across numerous monitoring stations, including in Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, Melaka, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Rompi
