LAWAS, 8 Oct: The implementation of the Punang Beachside project has been delayed due to changes in executive agencies as well as technical issues involving the existing fortress structure.
Deputy Prime Minister of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the project is currently undergoing a phase of study and redesign to ensure that the impact structures built are in line with Punang coastal conditions, especially for handling hacking and wave shocks.
"The Punang Beach Coastal Project has been delayed. The project was initially implemented by the Department of Public Works (JKR), before being handed over to RECODA and construction work on the fort has already been done", he said.
He said this when he was found after making a work visit to Kampung Punang, here today.
He said that the technical issues contributing to the project's delays should be thoroughly studied before further work is carried out.
He said the situation was important because Punang coastal area is prone to the risk of breakdowns and wave shocks due to its position facing open sea.
In related developments, the Old Regional Council provided some facilities for use by residents and visitors in the coastal area of Kampung Punang.
Among them is the Nature Walk which offers views of the beach, as well as a hall equipped with stall facilities for local merchants.
The effort is part of the government's initiative to revive Kampung Punang coastal area which could potentially be developed as a tourist destination in Lawas.
The work visit to Awang Tengah also included a review of the burial ground at Kampung Punang which is in need of restoration work.
He then reviewed the project of a tahai house in the village.
