KUCHING: Sarawak is placing greater emphasis on community-led experiences to strengthen its appeal as a business events destination, moving beyond conventional tourism offerings.

The approach was showcased through the Sarawak Beyond 2026: Destination Discovery Programme (SBDDP2026), organised by Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak) from Sept 21 to 25.

Held over five days in conjunction with BESarawak’s 20th anniversary week, the programme brought together 25 delegates from six countries.

Deputy Minister for Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak Datuk Snowdan Lawan said the state’s appeal lay in the opportunity for visitors to connect with its people and communities.

“Sarawak is a place where an event can become an experience that people can remember and be inspired by,” he said at the White Rajah Networking Dinner on recently.

A key highlight was an art therapy session with youths from Heart Treasures Kuching, a social enterprise supporting young people with intellectual disabilities.

BESarawak chief executive officer Jason Tan Chin Foo said business events should generate benefits beyond delegates’ experiences.

“A meaningful experience should create value for organisers, delegates and the destination,” he said.

The programme also featured cultural encounters, gastronomy, wellness activities and heritage venues, showcasing how Sarawak can combine business events with meaningful community engagement.
