SIBU (Feb 20): People from diverse backgrounds gathered at Lanang MP Alice Lau’s service centre today to celebrate Lunar New Year, enjoying festive meals, mandarin oranges and ang pau (red packets).
The event featured lively performances by the Sibu Wushu and Fitness Association’s lion dance troupe and a mask-changing act by Ho Jun Wen, with many attendees capturing photos and videos.
Lau, who hosted the open house, said that halal meal packs were also prepared for Muslim visitors.
“For the non-halal meal packs, we have more than 1,000 available, and visitors can collect them before receiving a festive angpow,” said the Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker, grateful for the cool weather compared to last year’s rain.
Lau added that from Chap Goh Mei, her service centre will continue distributing vegetarian meal packs on the first and 15th day of each lunar month at Tua Pek Kong Temple and the Street Friends Centre.
“This may not be a major contribution, but it represents care and warmth, a small gesture to let those in need feel that there is love in our community,” she said.
