KUCHING (Feb 8): Music has the power to gather people of diverse backgrounds and bridge the gap within the community, said Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap.

He believed music can transcend age, language and faith, and thus promote social peace and harmony.

“Despite a variety of languages, cultures and backgrounds, events like singing competitions can bring different groups of people together harmoniously,” he said when launching a singing contest at a shopping mall here on Saturday.

Yap said the singing contest exemplified how talent, passion and joy could bring the community closer together.

He also encouraged all the contestants to pursue their dreams in the field of singing.

“There are winners and losers in every competition. It takes courage for you to take to the stage and sing with all of your heart. This is the most precious achievement for it has entertained, or better still impressed the audience,” he said.
