KUCHING (Aug 24): Negeri Sembilan’s Gan Chen Jie and Andrew Goh Zheng Yin have been named as the best athletes of the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma XXI).
Gan and Goh were officially recognised as the best athletes during the closing ceremony of the national competitions that was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim tonight.
The 20-year-old shooting queen Gan won an astonishing seven gold medals in all the shooting categories she competed in, as well as breaking two Sukma records in the individual’s 50 metres rifle three positions category and individual’s 10 metres air rifle category.
The other categories she won were team’s 50 metres rifle three positions, individual’s 50 metres rifle prone, team’s 50 metres rifle prone, team’s 10 metres air rifle, and mixed 10 metres air rifle.
As for Goh, the 20-year-old won five golds out of the seven categories in the swimming event, including breaking two national records in 50 metres breaststroke and 100 metres breaststroke and another two Sukma records in the 200 metres breaststroke and 4×100 metres medley relay.
The other category he won was the mixed 4×100 metres medley relay event.
Both Gan and Goh were awarded RM2,000 each in prize money for being named as the best athletes of Sukma XXI.
Also present at the closing ceremony were Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg; Deputy Prime Minister Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof; federal Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeo; and Sarawak Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
