KUCHING, Mar 25: Works Minister and Kapit MP Alexander Nanta Linggi has moved to defuse speculation over succession in Kapit, stressing that it is widely understood candidate nominations rest squarely with the party’s highest leadership, but that attention should be directed towards strengthening the pipeline of capable grassroots leaders.

In a Facebook post, Nanta clarified that his recent reference to his political secretary, Alvin Runggah Jimbun, was not intended as a formal nomination for the Kapit parliamentary seat.

Instead, he said the mention was meant to highlight the importance of nurturing leadership potential at the grassroots level so that capable individuals are ready to serve when the need arises.

Nanta also noted that while names may occasionally surface in public discussion, the authority to decide on candidates ultimately rests with the party’s top leadership.

Earlier, political analyst Jayum Jawan had observed that although component parties may propose potential candidates, the final decision lies with the party or coalition leadership.

Responding to the commentary, Nanta said the priority should be to continue developing leaders within the community rather than focusing on speculation over possible nominees.

“What is more important at this stage is to continue preparing capable leaders at the community level so the party has leaders ready when required,” he said.

He added that Kapit’s governance and development depend on leaders who are competent, committed and responsive to the needs of the people.

“As long as he is entrusted with the mandate, he will continue to serve with full responsibility for the welfare of the people,” he said. — DayakDaily
