KUCHING, 23 September: The Sarawak government has a new method to solve the flash flood problem in Bintulu, especially Batang Kemena.

Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the low geographical conditions in the area made Batang Kemena vulnerable to flash flooding.

"Today, insya Allah, our solution is already there and will be implemented at some point. It means we can solve, at least the flood problem in Bintulu", he said.

Johari said so at the inaugural closing dinner of Innovation and Integrity Surveyed Soil Day (HIITS) 2026 here, today.

According to him, the same approach is also being taken into consideration in Sibu development to ensure that issues related to floods and climate change can be addressed more effectively.

He added that Sarawak needs more urban planners to design cities that are more resilient to climate change.

"Risk of flooding, erosion, rising water levels and extreme weather must be taken into account in the decision-making process regarding with development", he said.

He said Sarawak now had to get the services of urban development experts from abroad to help tackle climate change issues in urban development planning. -TVS
