KUCHING, Jan 25: Pending assemblyman Violet Yong shared on her Facebook page today that she will attend the swearing-in ceremony for the next Sarawak Governor on Monday (Jan 29).

Incumbent Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, 88, has been serving as Sarawak’s Head of State or TYT (Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak) since March 1, 2014, following his resignation as the fourth Chief Minister of Sarawak – a position he held for 33 years, from 1981 to 2014.

There has been no official announcement made yet regarding Taib’s term, which is set to expire on Feb 28.

“I will attend the swearing-in-ceremony of Sarawak new Tuan Yang Terutama on coming Monday,” Yong wrote in a Facebook post published a few hours ago today.

She did not, however, reveal the identity of Taib’s successor, which has sparked much speculation in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, MalayMail reported today that two sources close to the State government, contacted separately by the news outlet, confirmed Yong’s Facebook announcement that the swearing-in ceremony will take place on Jan 29.

“One said the ceremony is set to start at 3pm.

“The other said the name of the new governor is expected to be officially announced tomorrow.

“Both spoke on condition of anonymity,” the report read.

According to an announcement made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last Monday (Jan 22), former Santubong MP Tan Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has been confirmed as a candidate.

Last week, there were reports stating that Wan Junaidi had stepped down from his position as Dewan Negara president. — DayakDaily
