KUCHING, Mar 2: Residents of Sebuyau and the Samarahan Division are set to enjoy improved water security, with a new water treatment plant in Ulu Sebangan slated for completion by next July.

According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report, Utility and Telecommunication Minister, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, said the water treatment plant has a capacity of five million litres per day (MLD) and will function as a backup source to the Batu Kitang water treatment plant in Kuching, which is currently the main supplier for the area.

“Construction of the Ulu Sebangan water plant began last November and is expected to be completed by July next year.

“Once completed, we will have an alternative source apart from Kuching,” he said at a ‘Ramadan Ziarah’ and corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme organised by the Ministry for Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) in collaboration with the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) at Masjid Darul Aman Sebangan in Sebuyau today.

At the same time, Julaihi, who is also Sebuyau assemblyman, said a proposal for a larger-scale water treatment plant with a capacity of 40 MLD in Sebuyau is in the works as a long-term solution to address raw water supply constraints in Samarahan.

During the event, 60 asnaf (eligible recipients of zakat) from Kampung Menek, Kampung Lutong, and Kampung Arus Melayu received cash assistance and food baskets.

In addition, 30 children also received contributions in conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.

The annual programme, held in collaboration with agencies under or related to the ministry, aims to spread Ramadan cheer and strengthen ties between leaders and the community.

Also present were Samarahan Division Resident Mohamad Irwan Bahari Bujang; Director of Gas Distribution Supply at the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication Kasvenda Kassim; Sebuyau District Officer Ayuradiman Bujang; SDEC Head of Corporate Communications and Public Relations Agnes Nyelang; IRSDA Special Administrative Officer Anuar Daan; and Darul Aman Mosque Management Committee chairman Yaman Madian. — DayakDaily
