No proposal to increase Sarawak parliamentary constituencies, says EC

KUCHING: The Election Commission (EC) has denied reports claiming that the number of parliamentary constituencies in Sarawak will be increased to a specific number.

EC secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus said there is currently no proposal to increase the number of parliamentary constituencies in Sarawak, including any constituencies purportedly linked to discussions on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

He said the EC was responding to a media report citing an alleged “proposal document on the redelineation of Sarawak electoral constituencies”, purportedly shared with the publication.

“For now, there is no proposal to increase the number of parliamentary constituencies in Sarawak involving any constituency as alleged by the publication in reference to MA63 discussions,” he said in a statement today (Sept 25).

Khairul clarified that only recommendations under Sarawak’s seventh review of electoral boundaries have been prepared.

The recommendations are currently being officially displayed for public inspection from Sept 1 to 30.

He urged the media to refer to the EC’s official portal and statements for accurate information concerning the review of electoral boundaries.
